In China, after the winter solstice, the quality of ginger in China is completely suitable for ocean transportation. The quality of fresh ginger and dried ginger will only be suitable for South Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East and other medium and short distance markets from December 20. Start to fully meet the British, Netherlands, Italy, the United States and other ocean markets.
On the international market, more ginger will be traded internationally again this year, despite problems before and after the harvest in major exporting countries. Due to the outbreak of special circumstances, the demand for seasoning ginger is growing strongly.
China is by far the most important exporter, and its export volume may reach 575000 tons this year. 525000 tons in 2019, a record. Thailand is the second largest exporter in the world, but its ginger is still mainly distributed in Southeast Asia. Thailand's exports this year will lag far behind previous years. Until recently, India was still in third place, but this year it will be overtaken by Peru and Brazil. Peru's export volume is likely to reach 45000 tons this year, compared with less than 25000 tons in 2019. Brazil's Ginger export will increase from 22000 tons in 2019 to 30000 tons this year.
China accounts for three-quarters of the world ginger tradeThe international trade of ginger mainly revolves around China. In 2019, the global ginger net trade volume is 720000 tons, of which China accounts for 525000 tons, accounting for three-quarters.
Chinese products are always on the market. Harvesting will begin at the end of October, after about six weeks (mid December), the first batch of ginger will be available in the new season.
Bangladesh and Pakistan are the main customers. In 2019, the whole Southeast Asia accounts for almost half of China's Ginger export.
The Netherlands is China's third largest buyer. According to China's export statistics, more than 60000 tons of ginger were exported to the Netherlands last year. In the first half of this year, exports increased by 10% over the first half of last year. The Netherlands is the hub for China's Ginger trade in the EU. China said it exported nearly 80000 tons of ginger to 27 EU countries last year. Eurostat's Ginger import data is slightly lower: the import volume of the 27 EU countries is 74000 tons, of which the Netherlands is 53000 tons. The difference may be due to trade not conducted through the Netherlands.
For China, the Gulf countries are more important than the 27 EU countries. Exports to North America are also roughly the same as those to EU 27. China's Ginger exports to the UK declined last year, but this year's strong recovery may break the 20000 ton mark for the first time.
Thailand and India are mainly exported to countries in the region.
Peru and Brazil account for three-quarters of their exports to the Netherlands and the United StatesThe two main buyers for Peru and Brazil are the United States and the Netherlands. They account for three-quarters of the total exports of the two countries. Last year, Peru exported 8500 tons to the United States and 7600 tons to the Netherlands.
The United States has more than 100000 tons this yearLast year, the United States imported 85000 tons of ginger. In the first 10 months of this year, imports increased by nearly a fifth over the same period last year. The import volume of ginger in the United States this year may exceed 100000 tons.
Surprisingly, according to the import statistics of the United States, the import from China decreased slightly. Imports from Peru doubled in the first 10 months, while imports from Brazil also grew strongly (up 74%). In addition, small quantities were imported from Costa Rica (which doubled this year), Thailand (much less), Nigeria and Mexico.
The import volume of the Netherlands also reached the upper limit of 100000 tonsLast year, imports of ginger from the Netherlands reached a record 76000 tons. If the trend in the first eight months of this year continues, the import volume will be close to 100000 tons. Obviously, this growth is mainly due to Chinese products. This year, more than 60000 tons of ginger may be imported from China.
In the first eight months of the same period last year, the Netherlands imported 7500 tons from Brazil. Imports from Peru doubled in the first eight months. If this trend continues, it may mean that Peru imports 15000 to 16000 tons of ginger a year. Other important suppliers from the Netherlands are Nigeria and Thailand.
The vast majority of ginger imported into the Netherlands is again in transit. Last year, the figure reached nearly 60000 tons. It will increase again this year.
Germany was the most important buyer, followed by France, Poland, Italy, Sweden and Belgium.
